In 2013, Women's Global Empowerment Fund (WGEF) continues to provides microfinance and educational opportunities to women recovering from brutal violence and poverty northern Uganda. Our goal is poverty alleviation, increased human and food security and women's empowerment. Our "credit-plus" model focuses on three areas in addition to economic development: literacy, leadership and health. We have had enormous success addressing the systemic inequities that women face in post-conflict settings.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Womens Global Empowerment Fund reaches women in post conflict northern Uganda thru microfinance loans and educational programs, creating opportunities while strengthening families. It seeks to offer women leadership and empowerment abilities required to lead successful, dignified lives. Women in northern Uganda faced unimaginible violence and poverty for over 25 years, many of our clients are former child soldiers, sex slaves and need economic activity and education to create a brighter future.
How will this project solve this problem?
Thru grassroots strategies, women are given the tools necessary to alleviate extreme poverty, facillitating sustainable human development and empowerment. Women are given small loans to create businesses, along with educational opportunities, including literacy, health and leadership trainings. Our Credit Plus program focuses on women in borrowing groups, using the ideas of collective responsibility, community participation, and the desire for self-determination.
Potential Long Term Impact
Our program uses a microcredit loan to address systemic issues of poverty and marginalization, focusing on women and families. By providing economic activity to several hundred women and enabling them to attend trainings focused on social capital building, we are changing the landscape of northern Uganda. The virtuous spirals of microfinance are transforming the lives of women who are recovering from brutal violence and extreme poverty and creating a brighter future for the entire community.
