Challenge

The World Bank estimates that over 400 million people in India survive on less than $2/day, the yardstick commonly used to demarcate the poverty line. Sixty percent of the population lives in poverty and they suffer from high rates of hunger and malnutrition. These poor take small credit during crisis periods from moneylenders who charge exploitative rates of interest-often as high as 72%-350% per year. This puts the poor in a debt trap, and often results in their falling into bonded labor.

Solution

By accessing low cost and livelihood based credit from SAMRUDHI, the poor take up income generating activities, earn income, mitigates risk, plan for the future, makes choices, increase food consumption, and invests in their children's education, health and access to clean water & sanitation.

Long-Term Impact

By participating in SAMRUDHI's credit program, women learn new skills creating economic development and sustainability, a network of support, and financial independence for the first time in their lives.
