Summary
Following its emergency response to the Israeli military offensive, International Medical Corps is ensuring access to mental health services so they can recover and lead healthy, productive lives.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
With a 25-year history in emergency response, our teams are cross-trained in mental health & post-war recovery settings. We found that many people in Gaza – particularly women and children – reported traumatic events, while young people felt anxiety or hopelessness and depression. This is not uncommon, as the WHO reports the number of people suffering severe mental disorders increases by 1-4% following conflict and war, while the number suffering from moderate disorders increases by 5-10%.
How will this project solve this problem?
International Medical Corps is training health care workers to identify both common and severe mental disorders, while also creating a case management system so that the needs are not only identified, but handled swiftly and quickly.
Potential Long Term Impact
In addition to emergency health care, our teams also have been trained in mental health, especially in post-war recovery settings, and are ready to address the emotional and psychological needs of the people of Gaza.
Project Message
There is a pressing need for medical equipment, surgeons, & mental health care providers to begin addressing the effects of the violence. We urgently request your financial support.
