Summary
In 2 settlements in Khartoum, Salama and Soba-Aradi, disabled people have organized for self-improvement & human rights. NEF seeks support for their amazing initiative & planned basic services.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Sudan has huge numbers of disabled due to war, accident, poor health/health care--300 in these particular communities, who have lost everything fleeing their country's violence, drought/floods in the west and south. They need water jugs, transportation, counseling, advocacy, wheelchairs, prosthetics, hearing aids, braille training, medical supplies, health & disability education, skills training, microcredit for employment & income generating activities--so they can have independence.
How will this project solve this problem?
Home visits to update survey/registration of disabled; formalized counseling/referrals; emergency assistance funding for medicines & devices; microcredit & skills training for income generation; preschool & adult literacy; advocacy training.
Potential Long Term Impact
Social inclusion of disabled in their communities & their economic productivity/self-sufficiency; creation of an effective human rights instrument for their civic & political rights; advocacy against thousands of years of discrimination.
Project Message
I never let my disability get in the way of trying to do my best. We are all doing what we can to live a full and happy live and to contribute to the people in this community. It's our responsibility.
