Summary
Our community based disaster recovery program aims at the core of recovery: rebuilding communities and helping survivors get back on their feet.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Following the devastating Haitian earthquake in January, 2010, 1.5 million people are homeless and even more are displaced. Haiti faces not only the immense physical challenge of feeding and housing all those affected, but a social challenge as well. Displacement uproots communities and disrupts the social networks that provide survivors support, leaving survivors alone and vulnerable at the time they're most in need of those networks.
How will this project solve this problem?
We work with local communities and encourage survivors to take ownership of small scale recovery projects. By engaging with survivors we can help rebuild communities and strengthen survivors' capacity to cope with the demands of long-term recovery.
Potential Long Term Impact
By involving disaster survivors in the process of developing projects, we'll help give survivors back a sense of control and empower communities. Once empowered, survivors will be more able to direct their own recovery long after we've left.
Project Message
"Community involvement is key to long-term recovery. Where communities and individual survivors are empowered to direct their own recovery, we can affect change that reaches far beyond our time here."
