If the goal of universal primary education is to be achieved in Nigeria by 2015, then each of the over 10 million children out of school in Nigeria must be enrolled and complete basic school by January 2015. This is why Marian Hope Empowerment Initiative has set out to sponsor the education of 500 orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in rural Shendam. Most of these children are victims of the riots and unrest that have visited the state (Jos) in recent years.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The crisis in Jos which affected Shendam greatly left many women widowed and children orphaned. These children roam the streets and become prey of kidnap, rape and are even used as agents to cause riots. Our sponsorship scheme sets to give these orphans and vulnerable children an opportunity to basic education which is theirs by right. owing to the fact that they never might see the four walls of a classroom if nothing is done because of the low economic standard of living of the people.
How will this project solve this problem?
If the OVC are educated, there will be developmental changes in the community. The children will know their rights and wont be used as vessels or objects to start a riot or crisis.
Potential Long Term Impact
The educational sponsorship of orphans in rural Shendam will sponsor 500 OVC to school. When children are educated, they know their rights and they become key agents of change and development in their communities. Also by sponsoring these children we are also meeting the Millennium Development Goal of universal primary education for all.
