Thanks to the generous support of all of YOU, Food for the Poor and some very special people our school will open the first Monday in October! What a gift and a blessing for so many!
We held our Kay Anj School registration last week in our new church. It was overwhelming, controlled chaos, busy, a little frustrating at times and .....wonderful! We took in 49 Pre-K and Kindergarteners ages 3-6. The adult family members registering the children could not read or write, none of them. We explained our Matenwa methodology and curriculum and one parent turned to the large group of parents, guardians and said "This is GOOD! None of us can read or write because we were taught in French and had to drop out of school because we didn't know French". I (Debbie) ran and hugged him! Everyone laughed at me of course but his words rung very true for all of the adults in the group.
Our Dekle community neighbors are thrilled about our new school opening. We will start with 90 children. Our 41 Kay Anj kids and the new 49 little guys. We have hired 6 beauiful, christian teachers. They will leave on September 14th and travel to LaGonave (where Matenwa Community Learning Center is located) to be trained in the Matenwa Methodology. They are very excited to learn "the Matenwa way". They will live at Matenwa for two weeks. They will then return and open our new school!
After our registration last week we then, with two of our mama's, headed for the fabric store! We purchased fabric for 180 uniforms! Each child will be given two uniforms, shoes, books, backpack, breakfast and vaccinations. We plan to bring in a Haitian Doctor to vaccinate all of our new students and their siblings. We are not required to do this but feel it will protect our school community and the families of Dekle. The families were very grateful.
If any of you are in the Northern Virginia area and want to come to our Biggest Fundraiser of the year...it's this Saturday! We'd love to see you there! Come help us "Raise the Roof" for our kids!!
As always, none of this would be possible without the generous support of all of YOU!! God bless you and our Haitian Family!
