Balu Iyer - IDEX Asia Program Director
Balu moved to the Bay Area from India in 1998, and completed a Masters in Public Policy at UC Berkeley. Prior to coming to the U.S., Balu worked for 6 years on poverty eradication programs with ActionAid India. Before that, he worked as a Program Organizer with the Aga Khan Rural Support Program. Balu also has a Masters in Rural Management from the Institute of Rural Management in Anand, India.
Shashi Tyagi - Co-founder and Secretary
Shashi Tyagi has been associated with the voluntary sector since 1968, starting with the Bhoodan Movement (landowners were persuaded to donate over four million acres of land to the landless) in Bihar. In 1983 she co-founded Gravis. Shashi has a particular interest in the economic empowerment of women, their health, education, training, and income generating potential.
Dr. Prakash Tyagi - Health Program Coordinator
Dr. Prakash Tyagi works for sustainable rural development in the Thar Desert villages of Rajasthan. Prakash was instrumental in the creation of a hospital for Gravis that serves a population of 100,000 in 40 villages. Prakash has worked for Catholic Relief Services, CARE , the UNDP and the Sandstone Mineworkers Awareness and Health program for IDEX. He is fluent in Hindi, English and Russian.
