Summary
Artistic activities, psychological support, reintegration with families & school for 100 street kids & at-risk youth, with the aim of partcipating in the construction of a world more fair & democratic
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
100 street kids who are high risk of entering drug trafficking, child prostitution and violence, from families whose income is less than USD$750 a year; mostly single parent homes where the mothers work in the informal job market usually as maids. We need to build a bathroom & classrooms. Currently classes take place in a trailer where summer temps can top 100F; and hinders development of technology curriculum etc. Their 1st project in a different city has 104 kids with 100% school attendance
How will this project solve this problem?
Under a “Big Top” in a lot in the center of Rio, children have activities such as Acrobatics, trapeze, Unicycle, juggling, theatre, dance, shows, Capoiera, contortionism, drums and psychological support and tutoring in an attached classroom.
Potential Long Term Impact
We cite a reduction in repeating grades (a huge problem for Brazilian children) and truancy, reintegration of children and families and better family relations. Arts activities increase self esteem, interpersonal relationships & communication skills
Project Message
Children from different areas, who live in a world of warring drug factions are treated as equals and learn to see others as equals. They send others here where they find a leadership of peace.
