Summary
To make use of diverse artistic manifestations, principally music, as a means of changing individually and collectively children and youngsters who find themselves in a socially risky situation.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
More than 100 students, from 8 to 20 years of age, study voice, the recorder, violin, viola, and cello. All classes are free as students come from families earning less USD$100 per month. The program needs donations in order to buy instruments and instruction materials, cover operational costs and expand the program to reach more children.
How will this project solve this problem?
Kids receive two 1-hour lessons per week and participate in a rehearsal on Saturdays. Introduction to music and score reading, instrument instruction and singing and voice, playful activities, perform at schools, theaters, cultural centers, etc.
Potential Long Term Impact
Music skills learned at Reciclarte are the catalyst for changes in other areas of children’s lives such as completing education, a stronger sense of self-esteem and good citizenship.
Project Message
Here in Rio de Janeiro we have about 6.000 young people working for armed drug dealers in slums. We can´t save them all but our work can be an example for government and other poor comunities.
