C/O Soram Pillai,
1/41, Bangalow Street,
My name is Sindhu. My father’s name is Saravanan. My native is Vilathikulam. My father was a lorry driver. I was the only child to my parents. I am studying 9th std. My father died when I was 3 years old. He died as he was infected with HIV AIDS. I am residing in my grandmother’s home. But we dint know that he died because of HIV AIDS. When a year passed my mother started to feel sick. We visited the doctor many times but we were not able to find out the reason. My grandmother and grandfather knew that my father died because of AIDS. But they never told us.
We admitted my mother in Vilathikulam, Govt Hospital. They conducted HIV VCTC test to my mother. The result was HIV positive. My mother was shocked to hear this. My mother was not co-operating to any treatment as she felt that there is no use in living anymore. At that time Mr. Ramachandran (CRS, Project manager) came to our home. He seems to enquire about the HIV patients in Vilathikulam Govt Hospital and they have given our address.
My mother was very adamant that she will not see anyone. I was a child and I was not aware of the things happening around. After a certain point of time my mother agreed to visit the hospital. Mr. Ramachandran insisted my mother that blood check up should be conducted to children also. So he took us to Thoothukudi Govt Hospital. They conducted the HIV-ICTC test. My mother was praying to god that i should be alright. But the result was HIV positive. My mother was shell shocked to hear this. I was not able to understand the things happening around me. At that time my CD4 count was very less. So I was in a situation of taking ART medicine. I was taken to Tirunelveli ART centre by CRS staff Mr. Ramachandran and treatment was provided.
One Home care guide was appointed for me by CRS. Her name is Thiruselvi. She was very kind to me. She lived near my house. She took me to ART Centre and gave me treatment. I was introduced to a new world. I was able to meet many children and I shared my experiences with them. CRS provided life skill training. If my father would have told this earlier I would have been saved form HIV AIDS. As my Grandfather and grandmother are becoming old we are strangled by our economy. My mother also can’t work as she is ART taker. At this point of time CRS helped my family by getting a job for her in ART centre which was newly opened in Thoothukudi. CRS also provided nutritional and educational support to me. After that I was not able to see CRS people for 1 year. When I asked my mother she told that the PWDS-CBCS, HIV project is over.
Then suddenly one day I saw Mr. Ramachandran, CRS coming to my home. He informed that we will be receiving online donations from Global Giving. It was great news to hear for us. They have started to come for home visits. I attended the program conducted by CRS. I was very happy to see all the children. CRS gave health mix, sweets and continuous counselling through regular home visits. They also took us to the Govt medical college hospital for CD4 count check and ART. I thank Global Giving for coming into my life and making me smile once again.
