This project is feeding and educating over 300 children who are either orphan or from a humble background in one of the slums in Mombasa Kenya. This project is situated in one of the slum areas in Mombasa where poverty and unemployment rates are 70% and 80% respectively. For many children in slums, obtaining an education is an elusive goal. This project creates an environment to learn. Once educated, the child will find value and meaning in life, in a form of employment or entrepreneurship.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Poverty and high unemployment matters have hindered many parents from taking their children to school. Illegal activities such as selling, use of drugs and illegal brews have made parents abdicate their responsibilities of taking kids to school. Illiteracy is very high. Education facilities are wanting. For future posterity, present generation must be educated. This project supports the children both morally and financially from poor families/orphans in getting an education to become successfull
How will this project solve this problem?
Learning facilities will be put up for the children to learn in an enabling environment. Right now pupils who are being supported are learning in dilapidated building which when it rains, disruption of learning takes place. Further more there are 70 pupils in a class that is supposed to hold only 40. Good learning environment will also help in convincing parents to bring children to learn. The children if well educated will transform the area through business hence improving security.
Potential Long Term Impact
In the long run literacy rate will be high hence people will not only be wise but also knowledgeable about what is wrong and what is right. Security will go down as income in the area will increase, more parents will be ready to support their children through school. They will be able to sustain and fund education activities. Furthermore, drug peddling and selling of illegal brews will be alleviated if not eradicated. In the end no more hand-outs for the community but business development.
