Summary

Provide 500 MP3 Lifeplayers to hardship schools (2 per school) in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Most Maasai schools sit in remote areas, making it difficult to recruit qualified teachers. With a range of educational programs for teachers & learners loaded on to the Lifeplayer - such as English in Action (produced by the British Council), primary school lessons & practical programs - on-demand learning access is possible. This is an effective & cost-effective way to enhance knowledge for thousands

Challenge

Maasai schools are some of the lowest performing in Kenya. They are under-resourced, have large class sizes, poorly trained teachers and lack electricity. Maasai children are keen to learn, but with so much lacking, a quality education is difficult to obtain.

Solution

The solar and wind-up MP3-enabled Lifeplayer will be pre-loaded with quality programs that can be accessed again and again. Teachers and students will be able to dramatically improve English literacy and listen to Ministry of Education radio school lessons. They can hear practical programs broadcast on the community radio station in the Maa language and record them. Teachers can record lessons in advance if they will be away or during the rainy season when it may be hard to reach school.

Long-Term Impact

With access to up to 64GB of quality education programing, tens of thousands of children’s academic performance will improve, as will English literacy pronunciation and general knowledge. Girls will have the same learning access as boys. Absenteeism is high on market days when children have to help their mothers or when it rains. Whatever a child misses, can be made up. The Lifeplayer will play a vital role in improving quality education access for these hardship and often isolated schools.
