In 2011 June, with the support of all our donors, Akshara continued its work in 1780 Anganwadi centers in Bangalore. The mission is to ensure that about 40,000 children from unprivileged backgrounds receive quality pre-school education.
The plan was to continue to strengthen the existing 1549 anganwadis with additional training, monitoring and replenishment of some TLM. We also began to work with the 193 new anganwadis that have been set up by the Department. Through this we hoped to ensure that 40,000 children get a quality preschool education
To ensure the above objective, we continued to train the Anganwadi workers and the helpers in concepts of pre-school education which would help them to to make the Anganwadi an efficient place for learning.
One of the main areas on which we concentrated was strengthening the community around the Anganwadi - The Bal Vikas Samithi (BVS). The Bal Vikas Samithis are statutory committees at the Anganwadi Level consisting of parents, community elders, educationists and the head teacher of the nearby school along with Anganwadi worker. The committee is set up to plan and monitor the activities around the Anganwadi Centre. Some of the issues which will be addressed are: What is a model anganwadi? What are the problems an anganwadi worker faces in the field? What are the facilities the community will get from an anganwadi? What can a BVS member do to help and support the centre? Between December 2011 - February 2012, we trained BVSs in 398 Anganwadis. The focus of the training was on the roles and responsibilities of the BVS in an Anganwadi and how they can support in delivering quality preschool education.
These trainings helped, both the parents and the Anganwadis staff - the worker and the helper to structure their efforts in the Anganwadis so that the efforts can yield positive outcomes and contribute to delivering quality education to children.
The below case study is of the Haragaddi Anganwadi and how the worker used the learnings of the BVS training to arrange for better facilities for her Anganwadi:
Haragaddi Anganwadi is located in Haragaddi village , Anekal ICDS project,Bangalore. Surekha is the Anganwadi worker of this center and she has 27 children in her center. Till recently, she was running her center in a small room. it was very difficult for her to conduct the preschool activities. Many a times, she approached the Gram Panchyat members to put across this problem. In December 2011, the Akshara field team conducted the BVS members training in this center. In the training, the main focus was on the problems of the center and discussed various solutions with the BVS members. Once of the solutions was to get a room for Anganwadi activites in a near-by Government school. This will provide ample and safe place for the Anganwadi children in the school. After the BVS training, Surekha with the support of the BVS members approached the school to seek help. She was able to convince the Head-mistress and the teachers to allocate one classroom for the Anganwadi activity. She soon shifted her center to the government school campus. She celebrated the inauguration of the new center by conducting fun-activities for the children. Children participated in action songs and sang rhymes and fancy dress competitions. The ICDS project officers present there, appreciated Akshara's BVS training which was very well put into practice by Surekha. Surekha's center is now a "model Anganwadi center" for many Anganwadi workers.
This is just one success story of our work with the Government Anganwadis in Bangalore. With the support of donors like you, we are able to reach through even the remotest corner of the city to provide quality pre-school education to children.
Thanks for your support !! Looking forward to your patronage in future !!
