Summary

While Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a compulsory subject in Ghana, did you know that many children and youth never get the chance to learn basic computer skills through an actual computer? Our goal is to open a free computer centre for school-children in Kumasi to enable underprivileged Ghanaian students to be connected with our ever-changing, digital world of information.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

While Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a compulsory subject in Ghana, did you know that many children and youth never get the chance to learn basic computer skills through an actual computer? Kumasi has 241 primary and 204 junior high schools. 41 of these schools have computer laboratories and only one of these schools is able to provide internet connection for their students. Some school-children write exams on ICT without even having the chance to touch an actual computer.

How will this project solve this problem?

Our goal is to open a free computer center for schoolchildren in Kumasi where volunteers can teach ICT for all of the 10 cluster schools. The average size of each class is 35 students and each school will be sending 3 classes to attend to our program. The ages of the children participating in the programme span 12 to 15. By purchasing 20 adequately equipped, we will enable underprivileged Ghanaian students to be connected with our ever-changing, digital world of information.

Potential Long Term Impact

Computer and internet access are directly related with poverty eradication and youth empowerment. There are 10 public basic schools within the catchment area. This project will pave the way to provide approximately 1,050 schoolchildren with better education and the tools to thrive in today's hyper-connected environment.
