SOL International plans to operate an Educational Community Center in Roatan, Honduras for dozens of at-risk youth. We will offer free daily tutoring sessions, computers with internet access, and a safe, positive environment for children to study after school. The Honduran education system is extremely underfunded and lacking resources. SOL International seeks to supplement the public school system in Roatan, Honduras with our education center.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Honduras is an impoverished nation with few resources to commit to its educational system. Many children do not even complete the required 6 grades of schooling. Classrooms are overcrowded and teachers can go long periods without pay, which commonly results in teacher strikes. SOL International will supplement this education system with a free after-school education center for at-risk youth. Without this assistance many children could simply stop attending school at a very young age.
How will this project solve this problem?
SOL International will provide a free-after school education program that includes tutoring, access to computers with internet, and supervised study periods in a safe and positive environment. Healthy snacks and vitamins will be given to the children that participate in these after-school educational programs. The educational center will also conduct classes for young men and women about peer pressure, life skills, HIV/AIDS education, and healthy lifestyles.
Potential Long Term Impact
"Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family" - Kofi Annan - This project seeks to empower dozens of at-risk youth through education. Through educational programs, SOL International hopes to improve the quality of life for these children and their families. Education will lead to employment opportunities for these children, reducing their risk of entering into a life of crime and drugs.
