Summary

Proyecto Horizonte is changing the lives of 800+ children and their families through a program combining education, heath care and community development. Our approach covers the needs of the target group in a holistic way, is run almost exclusively by local staff and volunteers, and has no operating outside the country. We will lift this community, known as one of the poorest and most dangerous in the country into lower middleclass within one generation and we are half way there!

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The approximately 1500 families in Mineros San Juan have been trapped in a poverty cycle since the foundation of the community in 2001. Many of the residents live without access to basic sanitation, adult illiteracy rates are high, and severe health ailments are prevalent. Due to the domestic migration background, the residents had difficulties to integrate into the urban life and children were left alone. These challenges are possible to overcome through improved delivery of vital services

How will this project solve this problem?

Proyecto Horizonte continues to increase its outreach. We support our target group in all aspects of life. We know that we need to be persistent in our approach to break habits, we need to look after those having difficulties to adjust and we need to give opportunities to those with potential to be future leaders. This will break the poverty cycle. The money that will be raised helps paying for the team of local employees people working for us and materials, including books, supplies, and food.

Potential Long Term Impact

We will lift the community of 3000+ people out of extreme poverty to a lower middle class within one generation. In parallel we will to transfer the responsibility for the program to the local leaders in phases. We are half way through our program with fantastic results but many challenges left. Last year we had the first 50 graduates from our school. Through improved education, better health, and a stronger, more unified community, Mineros San Juan has long realized the benefits of our work.
