This project will help our university scholarship recipient Isaac, help his community build classrooms, start a library and train teachers to educate all, but especially girls and orphans.
Gem West Location has a total population of slightly above 35,000 people comprising about 3,000 families. Our village currently has over 1,000 orphans aged between 0-15 years. Most of them cannot make ends meet and are ignored and left to live in squalid conditions. There are no educational facilities in the area. Most people are illiterate and their major activity is farming. Compounding the problems is the over-reliance on wood fuel which is causing desertification.
1. Classrooms will improve learning conditions for children, especially girls and orphans 2. Library will empower girls, orphans, and women through availability of reference materials and training 3. Solar panels will reduce desertification 4. Training teachers will improve the education of the children 5. Connecting the village to the electrical power supply will allow the possibility of entrepreneurship
This project will help PATHWAYS scholar, Isaac, and his local community based organization solve the problems of little educational opportunity for 80 girls and orphans, lack of training for women, lack of employment options, and desertification in his community area.
This project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc).
