Snehadeep Trust for the disabled is a non profit organisation whose goals are to empower India's disabled community, by training them in using Computers, English speaking and communication skills, soft skills,Career guidance, and then finding them suitable jobs in both Government and private sectors. Most of our beneficiaries are from economically backward classes who cannot afford Higher education. Snehadeep aims this academic year 2014 to 2015 to place at-least 75 youths in good jobs.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Employment is a major concern for persons with disabilities. Most people with disabilities are either unemployed or under-employed in the country. There are approximately 15-20,000 youths with disability in rural Karnataka, who are unemployed. It is not that they are out of jobs only because of their disability comes in the way of their functioning, and both employment and income outcomes appear to worsen with the severity of the disability
How will this project solve this problem?
Knowledge of IT provides the visually impaired an opportunity to integrate into society. This is possible, due to the capability of access technology based on IT to provide voice and tactile output. Thus, IT is able to substitute the visual signals of traditional ways of doing things, into forms of output more convenient for the visually impaired. The idea is to enable them to use JAWS (screen reading software) and Kurzweil (an OCR), as tools for their studies to gather information.
Potential Long Term Impact
Snehadeep envisages training these youths in the areas of computers and enabling them to be gainfully employed. We plan to establish similar centers in Mysore and in Chennai to facilitate the special children and youths to come out of their isolation and be self-reliant. It is our ambition to set up a Call Centre to provide Job opportunities to our trained candidates with the support of Corporates. The long term impacts are that our disabled community will be economically independent.
