Yachay Wasi wants to maintain a day care center - kindergarten, providing a high quality early education which is open, fair, respectful, inclusive and flexible, rescuing the local traditions and the Inca heritage for children from the poorest areas and its adjacent communities in Ollantaytambo, 90 minutes' drive from east Cusco.
This project also wants to build an organic farm to provide free and healthy breakfast to 45 children in order to stop the malnutrition cases.
In Peru of the 3.8 million people that live in extreme poverty, 2.1 million are children. In Ollantaytambo there are many social problems as alcoholism, gender and children abuse, child labor and malnutrition. There are no educational institutions, either public or private for children aged below three years old. So women are not able to work or if they do, they have to carry their kids on her backs, leave them with their older brothers or kids are in the street without supervision.
The Yachay Wasi day care-kindergarden attends children from 1 to 6 years old, from 8.30am to 5pm (optional). This will allow their mothers to work while they are well cared and stimulated under professional supervision. If we expand the school we will be able to receive more children, giving their mothers the opportunity to contribute with the family economy. If we build the Tierra de Ninos farm we will be able to provide some free and healthy meals for children, reducing the malnutrition cases.
For the first time in Ollantaytambo children below 3 years old will be attended at an educational center. This project will contribute with the development of the children who will attend the day care center-kindergarten, giving them solid foundations for their future.
We will provide professional training to local people to work with children.
We would influence families and social relationships in a positive way, and empower them for a better living standard.
