Educate 1,500 Children in Pakistan's Northern Area

$17,075 $0
Raised Remaining

This project will provide for the education of 1,500 children currently enrolled in primary school in Northern Pakistan, where female literacy rates are at 29%. The funds raised will go to pay for teachers' salaries, rent and operating costs as well as books and materials for these schools. Education is by far the best counter-terrorism measure there is in this part of the world where extremists are vying for control over hearts and minds.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The dastardly attack on the life of 14 year-old Malala Yousefzai draws attention to the struggle for gender equality in Pakistan. Economic deprivation and inaccessibility to education are largely to blame as are cultural barriers. Traditional rural communities are often fearful that the educated girl will become too liberal and may start challenge prevailing cultural norms.

How will this project solve this problem?

To ensure the right of every child - girl and boy - to education, it is imperative to support community-based organizations who better understand the needs of their people. DIL, works through local partners and seeks involvement of the parents and the wider community. We value their advice and help in the running of the schools and student welfare. We are committed to providing quality education aimed at developing critical thinking & problem solving and leadership skills.

Potential Long Term Impact

We have created spaces for comfortable co-existence between universal rights (gender rights and socio-economic empowerment) and local cultural values and structures. Our students and teachers are effective members of society, renegotiating roles for women from within. Their families are filled with pride over their academic achievements as well as their ability to follow satellite news, budget the family income, and promote better health practices.
