What a great start  for 2015

A new year holds expectations for us all and CW is no different. School is on summer vacation in Peru and the best time to get a lot of work done. We have many projects that need completing and others we haven't discovered that we need yet.  See below what has happened already.

**We have updated our logo to better reflect that Chicuchas Wasi is a school for girls.                                                                                      Look at the logo globe in the header, what do you think of it?**

I'll bet you didn't know that our new school since it opened in 2012, has had no electricity, other than a borrowed extension from a neighbor. People in the Andes manage easily with little, in fact many rural families outside of the city live by the light of the sun. Ruth has applied to bring electricity to the school since 2012 for the obvious benefit it would bring to our students: technology, Internet and connection to the rest of the world, educational video programs, etc. Good fortune shined on us recently and over the last weekend the entire electric crew came and installed the CW electricity for a cost we can manage. Ruth made a deal with them, she bought the poles, cement, rocks, electric cables and hooks, and paid the labor. The entire electric crew came and installed electricity down the road to just inside the school gate. Soon, the electricity will extend to the classrooms. Finally!  Today we have lights and plans for computers and an internet connection in the CW future. Please see photo below

*************************************************************************************

While the CW school is closed for the summer, Ruth is taking advantage to build an adobe animal pen and cages to better manage our guinea pigs and sheep that will supply more protein to our meal program next March.

You may remember that our students were seriously anemic at the start of school in 2014, so we immediately changed to a high protein meal daily for all students and their mental and physical health improved.

The spirit of the families and staff is amazing at our school. You will see parents, teachers and other staff all jump in to help an important project. Here, the wife of the security man, is helping build this pen for the sheep that run around freely eating the vegetable garden we just planted with delight.  We need the vegetables in the kitchen too.

CW School is a happy safe place for our student with sounds of laughter and smiles all around. The CW team has created a loving environment for our girls to grow and explore freely, they are like little flowers that bloom fully in this love.

Our December fundraiser was successful and thanks to YOU we are off to a positive start for the new year. School will begin again in March with some newly completed benefits for the students.

We hope your 2015 is filled with peace, health, joy, and shared love for everyone.    It is possible.    Everything is possible.

Happy New Year 2015

- By Rae Lewis, Founder & President

This is the time of year when some people make a New Year's resolution. Some of us make a the resolution and keep it and some make one, then promptly forget it. Others don't bother, knowing they won't keep it. I am one of the latter.

When I reflect on another year coming to an end, I find this process takes me further back to 1987 when CW began and my life changed. I honestly had no idea how deep my commitment actually was or where it might lead. A catalyst yes, but it takes more than planting a seed to harvest an abundant crop. Many people like you came forward to help.YOU joined a growing army of kind, generous and thoughtful individuals who gave time, money and energy to help CW grow and have the incredible life-changing effect on the girls we serve today. Ruth joined in1998 and together we made observations and saw the changes that were needed. By 1996 we had learned that uneducated girls only could look forward to a live of misery and too many babies they could not feed. Decided by 1997, we founded the CW school for girls, though it is Ruth who is the educator and creator of the school.

Both Ruth and my thoughts have never been very far from CW for 27 years, so there must be an annual resolution in there somewhere, and we both keep our focus on CW even if not identified as a New Years resolution. What about you?

Chicuchas Wasi wishes for us all a 2015 with global peace, health, joy, and shared love for everyone. It is possible. Everything is possible.

As we leave the festivities of the holidays, we in the USA (and other countries surely) move into that dreaded time, called TAX TIME - time to pay our annual taxes. Please remember CW offers a 100% tax exemption for all donations made before midnight December 31, 2014. You can take the sting out of tax time knowing that you donate to a cause you trust and know that 99% of your donation will go directly to the school girls.

Our students wish to thank YOU for their 8 years of CW education. They are moving on in 2105 from 6th grade to public high school. Once again, our girls are ready and will make us all proud of their achievements, and I promise I will share them with you as they come up next year. YOUR donations gave them 8 years of a special school created and designed for them. Please click to see their video for you.                                                                                                  THANK YOU

The CW school is closed for the summer, but before we ended the school year we had our Christmas party and we watched with mixed emotion as we sent off our 10 sixth grade graduates to public high school. We will miss these cheerful and hard working girls around the school next March when school begins for 2015. However, we know they will be moving on with confidence and academic readiness.       GO Chicuchas Wasi Girls!

By now you all know that Efrain Valles is not only an active board member of the school, but a 27 year member of the CW family having joined as a child. Efrain gave a moving graduation speech to the girls, full of hope and encouragement for their futures. He reminded them that they are well prepared young women, ready to leave the protective arms of CW and move into the reality of Cusco public school, and they will do well. We expect to have frequent visits from these girls next year to tell us of their experiences and challenges - their faces nodded in smiling agreement. In the last photo the students are lined up, Efrain, Ruth and the teachers behind them. See photos below. Girls thank you video for you.

CW School celebrated a joyful Christmas party full of laughter, smiling happy faces, a gift of a large angel for every girl and a traditional 'chocolatada' (hot chocolate and panetone bread) You can see some parents came to watch the fun their daughters were having. We try to make this a happy celebration of our girls all together, so a positive school image to remember during the long 3 months that school will be closed.

Our second CW graduating class is saying goodbye to their beloved school on December 19 in preparation for high school. A bitter - sweet moment for us all when our students move on. However, 8 years with chicuchas wasi school has given them a good foundation and our girls will do well.

Each month I share a special story of significance at the CW school for girls. This school year will end on December 19, 2014, but right now there is growing excitement for the Graduation of our Second class of students from our new school. Plans are being made for the celebration and siblings, parents and friends are all invited to witness the achievements of their daughters. This event in itself has a ripple effect on siblings, cousins, neighbors and the community who will look upon our new graduates with curiosity and growing awareness as they enter high school. All know that these girls are going to do well in life.

The little girls in this picture are just beginning to learn at CW school and they too will do well...their stories will come next year.

                            GivingTuesday is December 2

NOW is the START of our annual fundraising campaign for the upcoming year. Our main focus is on the our basic operating budget of $130,000. But the school needs a few things we have not mentioned, but should now. Our new school was nearly complete in 2012 and we desperately needed the additional classrooms, so we opened for that school year with 5 grades. Today, it is 2 years later and fortunately all has been well, but we do need to finish up some of the unfinished construction and small projects that we put on hold when the exchange rate dipped.
The 2015 projects that need completion or implementation as soon as possible
•Safety hand rails lining concrete stairs and sharp patio drop off areas. $4,000.
•Animal cages to raise and contain sheep and guinea pigs to increase meal protein.$2000.
•Designated art area implemented with tables and material for class projects and stipend for volunteer art teachers. $3,820
•Resume Dental care for all students initiated in 2012 and on hold 2013 & 2014. Doing basic dental exams now to determine the amount of work needed & to get Quote for 2015.
•Professionally repaint School building and do deferred maintenance. $8,550.
•Construct a Greenhouse to grow food for the school kitchen in the frigid season.$3570
•Sturdy safe school playground equipment for the students....$2,000
•Additional school van to transport students safely over terrible muddy roads..$50,000.

To complete these projects and programs we will chip away at them as funds allow.
I promised to keep you abreast of our accomplishments and current needs.
The school construction was completed in 2013 but the above list was left incomplete.
The hand rails are urgent with the heavy rains that make the cement slippery and dangerous and an additional Van is urgent as we are beating up our current Van with overuse on bad roads.

Meet our graduating class of 2014
Meet our graduating class of 2014
Meet this years graduating class - our SECOND group of high achievers.

On December 19, 2014 we will celebrate our second graduating class and end the Peruvian school year. Because of YOUR generous donations we have had 8 years to prepare 10 more students for the opportunities awaiting them. They have a solid foundation they received from the CW school for girls to lean on. Leaving CW is always a bitter-sweet time for us all, but they have all taken advantage of YOUR gift of education and are well prepared for high school and the more challenging world of Cuzco.

To celebrate the achievements of the graduating girls, Ruth took all 10 girls on an overnight holiday to the Sacred Valley to expose them to their own heritage with a visit to the ancient Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo. They experienced their first sleepover in a pretty Pisac accommodation full of blooming red and yellow flowers, with dinner on table cloths and were treated as the special girls that they are. The final day outing included swimming, and playing in a paddle boat in a small lake. The girls have worked hard during their 8 years with CW and have grown and changed forever. They have big dreams today, way beyond the domestic chores of most girls from their background. Our girls understand that if they continue to work hard in high school, there is a whole new world within their reach. Confident and aware of their personal self worth today they KNOW they will have opportunities that the women before them never had or believed possible for their daughters. Thanks to the excellent academic and personal preparation at CW school for Girls they are prepared to make good choices.

Our girls shared a special weekend with their Director, their teacher and another teacher, and together they experienced what they never before had the opportunity to experience. They were all glowing and clearly enjoyed this time together.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE FOR OUR GIRLS
