Monsaengdao Ecological School provides free education and accommodation for vulnerable, adolescent girls from hill tribes and remote communities in northern Thailand.
Many children from northern Thailand's ethnic minority groups live in poverty and leave school early to find work to support their families. Young girls are particularly vulnerable to human rights violations including being trafficked to work in the sex industry. Monsaengdao Ecological School was established to provide an education for at-risk girls in a safe, supportive and healing environment. Around 30 girls, aged from 12 to 18 years, live and study at the school each year.
The school's eco-education program promotes hands-on learning. The girls develop practical and leadership skills that will be used throughout their lives. The students are empowered to be self-reliant and the school is supplied with healthy, organic food as an added bonus.
The school educates 35 girls each year, many of whom would be unable to continue their education otherwise. The students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to enhance their future study and employment prospects and to build more eco-sustainable communities.
I want to demonstrate what I have learnt with my family, then the community will see there is another way. My dream is to become a community leader with the power and the right to solve problems.
