In a region with one of the highest incidences of road accidents and fatalities, this program provides drivers with training to improve the safety and fuel efficiency of their driving. Asia Injury Prevention Foundation's mission is to provide life-saving traffic safety knowledge and skills to the developing world with the goal of preventing road traffic crash fatalities and injuries.
Worldwide, someone is killed or injured in a road accident every six seconds. The global death toll is expected to reach 1.9 million people annually by 2020. A closer look at the developing countries across Asia Pacific and Africa (APA) regions confirms that more than half of those fatalities take place in this part of the world. The APA region also has a high percentage of first-time car buyers in need of targeted driving skill training.
DSFL provides driver training sessions to licensed drivers of all ages focusing on improving safety and fuel efficiency. The safe driving portion focuses on using safety belts, recognizing and anticipating changing traffic conditions, avoiding distractions, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles. The program also provides train-the-trainer workshops to develop facilitators who deliver training sessions in the local language.
The project will focus primarily on training driver trainers, equipping them to teach drivers how to make roads safer for themselves and the rest of their communities. By also teaching fuel efficient driving, DSFL will also lower the carbon emissions from trainees' vehicles, thereby helping improve the environmental situation in these often polluted locales.
