Hundreds of indigenous children in Guatemala near Itzapa and Santa Maria will receive free primary and secondary education due to this programme.
Children from indigenous rural villages are being denied main stream schooling as their families cannot afford the materials or inscription fees. This leaves them without the opportunities that every child deserves. The children will be taught the National Curriculum. This solution provides a huge impact as it provides for many more than scholarships alone can.
By providing free schooling and vocational skills we can ensure these indigenous communities get the same opportunities as everyone else. With very small contributions from families and graduates, the school will then become sustainable.
Over the years this school will teach thousands. Because it will be run and funded by local communities in the future, it will also foster strong communities and ensure the indigenous populations are not swallowed up by development and ruralisation.
My people simply cannot afford the high prices of secondary education and therefore are thwarted in their desire to help their own families progress.
