150 stitchers in Kenya & Zambia are making tough, repairable leather footballs for kids who hardly get to see a proper ball. Each ball carries a simple HIV/AIDS or Malaria awareness message.
Unemployment is high across Africa & the opportunity to play sport is severely limited due to the chronic shortage of balls. There is no large scale ball production on the continent & imported balls are expensive & inappropriate for Africa's tough playing conditions. Coupled with these problems is a lack of health awareness about HIV/AIDS & malaria. Alive & Kicking addresses all three deficits by manufacturing hand stitched leather footballs, netballs & volleyballs in Africa.
We have created 150 jobs in stitching centres in Kenya & Zambia. 280,000 balls printed with HIV/AIDS and malaria health awareness have been made and either donated to children's projects or sold at an affordable price to organisations & individuals.
150 stitchers now have a chance to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. 12,000 balls donated yearly will help sustain these jobs, & give African children from poor communities balls to play with whilst learning how to stay healthy.
