Summary
To create a story of happiness for South African women in the form of six short documentaries. Happiness begins by finding out what these women most desire in life. What is the mountaintop they seek?
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
It can be impossible to see the mountains when the shadows are numerous. In a recent Gallup poll, 79% of South Africans say they are either struggling or suffering day to day, with women facing disproportionate challenges amidst the lasting effects of apartheid. In a country with the most people living with HIV/AIDS, their infection rates are up to 5X higher than menas. And inequalities in public services leave women facing 52% unemployment rates and the world's highest rate of rape per capita.
How will this project solve this problem?
To encourage South African women to speak out in powerful voices and shape their futures. To know their mountaintop of desires and help them find ways of reaching it, hearing the freedom they feel today and the freedom they still seek for tomorrow.
Potential Long Term Impact
Happiness empowers women by reminding them of their greatest desires and then sharing those desires with others. Since freedom is no easy walk for anyone, it strengthens our stride and directs our journey if we know that we do not walk it alone.
Project Message
aThere is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.a
- Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa
