Disha Resource Center consists of a public library, movie screening facilities and a coffee corner and aims to provide quality academic resources that will supplement the educational experience of college level students in Bangladesh. Through this endeavor, we hope to better equip and empower the leaders of tomorrow who will think critically and independently and be capable of solving some of the bigger problems the country struggles with as a developing nation.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
There are 7.6 million people in Dhaka and only 6 public libraries, that is, 1 library for 1.2 million people. According to a World Bank report, most English-medium universities also lack good quality resources in their libraries, that are usually exclusive to their university students only. Availability and accessibility of academic resources is extremely low.
How will this project solve this problem?
Disha's center will provide an abundance of good quality academic resources from around the world and make these materials inexpensive and accessible to college level students. The Center focuses on providing social science materials of different perspectives, allowing students to be a part of the many debates and discourses that are globally important today.
Potential Long Term Impact
Students will have a more meaningful educational experience in college as a result of having access to important academic resources that are currently lacking in the country, increasing the number of research performed in colleges and intellectual endeavors undertaken by young people in the community.
