Best Buddies program at Ngei High school has been so exciting and life changing not only to the current peer buddies who are involved but even to the other students in the entire school. Through the actively involved Best Buddies student members, they managed to organize for a recruitment meeting on 7th June 2010, to officially invite and involve their fellow students in the program. A total of 10 new peer buddies were recruited and matched into one-to-one friendship with buddies from their neighbouring school, Mathare special school.”After observing the activities of Best Buddies and the opportunities that it brings along to the lifes of both participants decided to be also involved and be a part of the change maker. Am looking forward to exciting and colourful friendship between me and my buddy,Tracia Nduku, a student from mathare special school.”Said Winnie Wanjiku, a newly recruited peer buddies who is in form 2.”Am so proud to be in Best Buddies and to have a new friend.”Said Tracia.
Also in attendance to grace witness and grace the occasion was Enouce Ndeche, the Executive Director of Best Buddies Kenya, the faculty advisor teacher from Ngei High school, Mr. Joseph Nyaga and special education teacher from Mathare special school, Mr. John Mwangi.”This is truly an extra-ordinary friendship and a great revolution just by seeing how how these young people are advocating for people with intellectual disability.”Said Mr.Joseph Nyaga from Ngei High school. ‘Getting the awareness from this kind of tender age, it would make our nation and the entire world an equal place for all human beings. More students with intellectual disability would be included in our special school system other than being separated and hidden in their homes.”Said Mr. Mwangi from mathare special school.
The newly recruited peer buddies were given hand-outs that would enable them to effectively and perfectly understand what Best Buddies is all about. The meeting was concluded by the Executive Director of Best Buddies Kenya who praised and thanked everyone for coming and for taking part in Best Buddies movement and helping to change our world.”I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been donating to Best Buddies Kenya through Global Giving or any other channel, just to see the success of Best Buddies Kenya. I would like to encourage them to continue donating as we thrive to achieve our goals.”Said Enouce.
