The first draft version of the heart health and diabetes manual is now complete thanks to our collaboration with the Comunidad Lingüística Kaqchikel. The manual has been culturally adapted to our patient population in rural Guatemala. The manual serves as a key educational tool for diabetes self care, and all seven sessions in the curriculum are taught in Kaqchikel. We are currently in our first round of focus groups with a selected group of health promoters which we are using to refine the drafted curriculum.
This is a pivotal moment for our health promoters, diabetic patients and their families. The classes that emerge from this effort will provide education on diabetes and the related adverse effects of this chronic illness. The classes will serve to create a sense of community for the participants and their family members, and the initial feedback from our health promoters working to implement these materials in each community where we see diabetes have been extremely positive.
