Depaul Slovakia provides 2 shelters and day care for homeless people in Bratislava (Slovakia). One shelter is open for any homeless people, the second on is for house who suffer from serious illness for a long time. The shelters are situated in different part of the city. We ensure them breakfast and dinner, clean clothes, shower and bed for night. Our social workers help them in basic needs: healthcare, communication with state authorities, legal advice and labor opportunities.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Couple of years ago we built up a shelter for homeless people based on the negative experience when 19 homeless people died due to frozen winter in Bratislava in 2005/2006. A person living on the street struggles to meet their basic needs every day. The basic questions as "where they will sleep tonight ?" or "what they will eat for breakfast?" don't have any answers.
How will this project solve this problem?
Approximately 150 homeless people from Bratislava and surrounding areas use services of our shelter every day. Since today, Depaul had 3,200 clients. Your support will help us to increase the quality of our clients life. We will be able to ensure them food, hygiene, bed and social assistance - communication with authorities, health and social care.
Potential Long Term Impact
Shelter St. Louise de Marillac provides shelter and day care for homeless people living on the margins of society with complex health needs. We provide them food and clothing, social assistance, social counseling and arranges medical and addiction treatment. The necessity and success of these measures proved to be very helpful again in winter 2011/2012. The winter was very cold. While dozens of people died of hypothermia in neighboring countries, the situation in Slovakia was totally different.
