Every day the Irish Cancer Society is here supporting Cancer Patients and their families at every stage of their cancer journey through a wide range of free support services, funding cancer research and empowering people to reduce their risk of cancer. The funds you raise will help us to ensure that no one has to face Cancer alone, and without your help we simply couldnt provide our many services to people affected by cancer.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The Irish Cancer Society provides many vital services to families across Ireland affected by cancer. One of our most important services would by our Night Nursing Service, the only free, out of hours, pallitaive national nursing service available to cancer patients in their own home. Being the only home pallitive care in Ireland, without your support this service would no longer be able to exist.
How will this project solve this problem?
The Irish Cancer Society's Night Nursing Service provides end of life care offering advice, reassurance and friendship to those they care for. The work of the Night Nurses has a profound affect on patients and their families at a very sad and painful time. Night nurses provide up to 10 nights of free care.In 2013 the Society's night nurses cared for 1,868 patients, providing 7,770 nights of care. We rely completely on your voluntary donations to run the Night Nursing service.
Potential Long Term Impact
One family described their experience saying "The support the Irish Cancer Society showed my Mam and our family in the final weeks of her illness was so appreciated. It allowed us to have one last wonderful Christmas with Mam at home. She was so happy in her last couple of weeks, in her own home, that it was almost hard to believe her illness was so serious. A very tough illness incredibly had a beautiful ending. Our family often talk of your nurses and how special they really are."
