This project will create a Mini Printing House providing a various set of Braille books to 1000 visually impaired children in Ukraine to help them explore the World with their hands through reading illustrated stories in Braille with tactile pictures.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
There more than 100.000 visually impaired children in Ukraine according to Ministry of Public Health and Department of Social Policy. Among them there are 1000 totally blind children. These children get acquainted with the world with the help of their hands. One of the main source to obtain information is a Braille and tactile book. In Ukraine such books are not produced. This project will affect the childhood of 1000 blind children through providing a various set of books with tactile pictures.
How will this project solve this problem?
The project designs, prints and spreads around the visually impaired children informative Braille books with accessible for reading tactile illustrations, so the blind children could read popular fairy-tales and imagine the heroes in the same way as their peers, learn Ukrainian ABC and improve their imagination and learning abilities. Braille books specialists are trained to design quality books. Children's mothers are taught to help the children with reading tactile pictures.
Potential Long Term Impact
We will help more than 1000 visually impaired children in Ukraine to get the same level of development as their healthy peers. These children will be able to attend comprehensive secondary schools. We will educate families allowing them to guarantee their children happy childhood and acquaintance with the world in the best way. The project will create a positive attitude toward people with disabilities and help integrate them with community.
