In 2012, Kenya Connect celebrated its 10th anniversary with the opening of a solar-powered computer Learning Resource Center. This facility offers students and teachers from our 54 enrolled schools to gain access to reading materials while joining the 21st Century by acquiring computer literacy. The center will also help us easily maintain the many established partnerships between schools around the globe. Our goal of $3,500 will completely fund our organization's operations for a single month.
At our project site in rural Kenya, there is an average student teacher ratio of 50 to 1. Our enrolled schools are poorly supplied with books and the majority of them are without electricity. Children are literally left in the dark here in the 21st Century, struggling to keep up literacy levels. Students and teachers alike are also unfamiliar with computers and lack basic technology skills.
Our Learning Resource Center is equipped with 20 computers offering students and teachers the opportunity to join the 21st Century with basic computer training and to connect to the world via the internet. And where there is a lack of materials in the local classrooms, the center will provide age appropriate targeted reading lessons. The center also allows children who may not be able to afford secondary school fees the opportunity to continue their education at their own pace.
Literacy measurements and national test scores will improve. More students will graduate from primary and secondary school and be college ready. Students and teachers will be computer literate and gain 21st Century skills for the marketplace.
The resource center is the only one of its kind in this area. We've experienced overwhelming excitement, enthusiasm and a real thirst for knowledge by all the students who have visited the center.
