More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In rural Sri Lanka, most families rely on agricultural work, leaving them vulnerable to market fluctuations, natural disasters like the tsunami, and abject poverty. Students of Horizon work to gain marketable skills they can use to increase their college eligibility and capture off-shore employment. They are then able to earn more than was ever possible in their agricultural community, elevating not only their own financial prospects, but also those of the entire village.

Activities

Horizon teaches English and computer skills, but also organizes projects for students to actuate their learning. One major venture is creating online lessons to get students generating income and to disperse teachings to other Sri Lankan students.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The goal is a replicable model of the school so that national and international students may benefit from a program that delivers an otherwise unattainable education. Entire communities will be elevated by the financial prosperity of the students.

Project Message

After studying 7 years at Horizon Lanka, I became a director of it at the age of 18 and am trained in Laos to take on BPO operations. I never expected to be trained abroad when I joined Horizon.
- P Isuru Senevirathna, Lead IT Instructor, Horizon Lanka Academy

Latest Update from the Field

Duleeka Dilhani Works in the Local Bank

By Nandasiri Wanninayaka - Founder of Horizon Lanka, December 16, 2009 12:26 PM

Duleeka Dilhani TodayDuleeka DilhaniDuleeka at Horizon Lanka
Duleeka Dilhani was a past student at Horizon Lanka. She studied computers and English and showed some remarkable achievements in the two fields. In addition, she was the most talented sportswoman at Horizon Lanka in many a sport.

After Advanced Level, Duleeka joined the local branch of the Bank of Ceylon in the village as an intern. Horizon Lanka is proud to produce confident young men and women after 11 years of its services to the community. Had Horizon Lanka not been in existence in the rural village of Mahavilachchiya, most of these youth would have ended up either unemployed or underemployed. Before Horizon Lanka, the boys' only option was to join the armed forces and for girls, the only opening was working as a machine operator in a garment factory. But now Horizon Lanka shapes up the lives of youth by giving a quality ICT and English education to the children in the village and enables them to be young men and women with a marketable skills in the extremely competitive job market.

The students of Horizon Lanka and the villagers of Mahavilachchiya thanks GlobalGiving and donors who donate to Horizon Lanka through GG for their support in producing confident youth from Mahavilachchiya.
