Guatemalan community radio stations play an important role in providing information and preserving indigenous culture. This project will train the next generation of community radio broadcasters.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Community radio stations are a powerful means to reach and give a voice to Guatemala’s rural population, particularly people who are illiterate or do not speak Spanish. The community radio stations are fighting more mainstream media sources that promote the newest trends and chip away at indigenous culture and languages. Unfortunately, these stations, particularly the more remote ones, have limited access to training resources that would strengthen their work and train new broadcasters.

How will this project solve this problem?

ArtCorps will train the next generation of broadcasters, including those in remote locations, in a replicable way. This includes creating a training video for distribution and cultivating leaders who can teach other broadcasters to engage listeners.

Potential Long Term Impact

The impact of this project will go beyond just the broadcasters: it will effect rural indigenous communities throughout Guatemala that receive news and educational information and are exposed to indigenous languages and cultures through the radio.
