Summary
The goal of the program is to prevent children from being sold into slavery by raising awareness among local communities about the rights of children and the threats posed by human traffickers.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Poor rural parents in Cameroon hand over their children to seemingly benevolent middlemen, who promise education and a better life in the city. 2.4 million children involuntarily work in domestic servitude, street vending, and child prostitution. The situation is exacerbated by the inefficiency and the corruption of the police and judiciary.
How will this project solve this problem?
Program orientates stakeholder groups, faith based organizations and target communities on human rights, anti-trafficking legislation and the ills of TIP ; forms and trains special Volunteer Corps in different forms of TIP and the strategies and processes of identifying victims; and provides training to improve the abilities of social workers, families and the community to protect and support victims and collaborate with the police and the judiciary to ensure the prosecution of offenders
Potential Long Term Impact
Program provides aftercare that includes the provision of shelter and basic care to 500 victims. Program empowers them with life skills such as commercial gardening, food processing, sewing and basic computing and resources for income generating activities and increase community awareness on the protection of human rights especially the prevention of TIP. Because most of the victims are undocumented, Nascent will ensure that they are registered with the councils and issued birth certificates
