Summary

Green is a public school in the Central City area of New Orleans. Originally built as a high school, Green now serves 4th-8th grade students and will expand to include K-3 grade levels next fall.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

New Orleans has a severe shortage of openings in the K-8th grades. By increasing the grades available at Green, Green will have the capacity to provide a high quality education to 600 children. Green is the new site for New Orleans Charter Middle School, the flagship charter school in New Orleans and the model from which the charter movement is based. In order to prepare the school for the 2006-07 school year, kid-sized furniture is needed in 6 classrooms and the cafeteria.

How will this project solve this problem?

1. Fundraise 2. Procure furniture using suppliers from whom Green Public Charter School receives discounts 3. Open Green to K-3rd graders in August, 2006

Potential Long Term Impact

Though much of New Orleans is still uninhabitable, it has been inaccessible to families with children due to a lack of schools. By adding desks, Green will instill in more students the skills for life-long learning and social advancement.

Project Message

Public school space for New Orleans students in K through 8th grade is exceptionally tight. The need ‘suggests more kids are in the city than anyone anticipated.'
