This is probably my last report through Global Giving as the challenge ends tomorrow (the 22nd) and it looks unlikely that we have met the challenge to earn a permanent fundraising spot on their site.
However, I am still feeling very grateful. Together we have raised nearly $2,000, which is a wonderful accomplishment and makes a significant contribution to the health of this project.
These funds have been generated just in time, because we are getting ready to recruit for our next class of "Getting Ahead in a Just-Getting-By World" participants which will meet weekly from February through May or early June. Meanwhile, we will also be starting the new phase of the Circles project - working with those people who have already completed "Getting Ahead" and have been casually working toward their goals on their own while waiting for this phase. They will be assigned "Allies" who will form intentional relationships of support for at least the next 18 months as they work toward self-sufficiency.
In addition to making a difference in the lives of those two groups of people, we are now in a place where these folks are empowered enough that they want to give back and make a difference in the community. Through Circles, a forum is provided for gathering community support and moving into action together. There is no time to be lost! Even last night, there was a shooting about a block from the church. If we are to reclaim the community, the time is NOW! Our big vision for the community is to transform it into a place where people can come when they need help and healing; where resources and caring people are present throughout the community to help make the transition to a more stable life. When you hear about the changes for the good in Pitcairn over the next few years, please know that you have helped to make it happen!
Since we will likely not be on the Global Giving site after tomorrow, you may receive project reports from me by sending me an email at email@example.com or looking me up on facebook. When I get the time, I am also planning to make a facebook page just for our Circles project where success stories will be posted.
Thanks again for helping to make hopeless poverty a thing of the past in Pitcairn.
Dear Friends and Family,
You have all been very generous and I thank you for your participation in our progress so far. Considering that this is a new format for fundraising for most of us, I didn't know if we would get any donations at all. So far, we've had $1,300 in donations from 20 unique donors! This has been a pleasant surprise for us as we begin to move forward! Even if we don't receive the $4,000 from 50 unique donors needed to achieve a permanent spot on Global Giving's fundraising site, we are still thrilled with every dollar that has come from this new funding source.
The amount raised through Global Giving at this point is approximately 1/10th of our total annual budget. Along with other funding sources, we are very hopeful to reach our goals and have our project fully funded. As of this time, we have enough funds committed to sign our first-year contract with Move the Mountain and get our hands-on training for Circles in January - a very good start.
In early February we will assign Allies to the group of people who have already completed our first "Getting Ahead" program from last year and begin holding our weekly Circles meetings. The first "Getting Ahead" group includes three families, who have four children between them, with one more on the way. Around the same time, we hope to begin our next "Getting Ahead" group, recruited from the needy families at the Pitcairn Food Pantry. This new "Getting Ahead" group will likely have approximately 12 people, representing 6-8 families.
When we are fully funded, we will be able to run a second "Getting Ahead" group in the fall of 2011, possibly exceeding our desired 10 families that we help get out of poverty. Full funding will also help us get additional staff help, as well as be able to do more poverty education in our community to make sure we are all working together effectively to combat this monumental problem of poverty.
Our big dream is to make Pitcairn a place where people can get back on their feet and learn to live in a self-sufficient manner with the assistance of the whole community, making Pitcairn a better place for all residents. Thanks for all your support in helping to make this a reality!
Friends and Family,
We were just notified that starting at 12:01 a.m. EST on December 10, 2010, GlobalGiving will host a 24 hour matching challenge. Donations up to a maximum of $1,000 (per unique donor) will be matched at 15% until the total grant amount of $3,000 is used up. Only ONLINE donations are matched. Donations received via checks will not be matched.
If you know someone who is interested in donating but has not done so yet, tell them to wait until Friday! Each on-line gift will do double-duty in helping us draw closer to our goal of $4,000 from 50 unique donors by December 22.
Thank you for all the ways you have supported this project. So far, we have $590 that we did not have for the project before! And many people have heard about it and are asking questions, which is a wonderful outcome! Our biggest dream is that Pitcairn will become a place where people can come to learn to live a more stable, wholistic life. Then we hope and pray that this outcome "trickles down" to other distressed areas surrounding us until we are a whole, safe, and healthy area of Allegheny County again.
Many blessings to all of you who have supported the project! Cyndi

Combined with other sources of funding, this project raised enough money to fund the outlined activities and is no longer accepting donations.
