Summary

CCA trains and matches trusted adults one-to-one with kids undergoing cancer treatment to brighten their days during an often scary and isolating treatment process.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

According to the National Childhood Cancer Foundation, "Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children in the United States." There are 450 children (under 18) who die in Oregon each year, and in Portland alone 400 children are treated for cancer at Doernbecher and Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospitals. They lose peer-to-peer contact, and their adult interactions tend to center around their disease and treatment program. Treatment has many physical side effects affecting self esteem.

How will this project solve this problem?

CCA provides supportive mentors to children undergoing emotionally isolating and physically difficult cancer treatment. These activities renew a child's sense of control, bring laughter and distraction, reduce isolation and build self-esteem.

Potential Long Term Impact

CCA's Chemo Pal program will brighten the lives of 130 children annually battling cancer, providing them with a dependable, caring, encouraging friend with whom they can laugh, play, and do crafts and games in the midst of their cancer treatment.
