PETs go and last where wheelchairs won't. PETs go to leg handicapped children in poor or developing countries around the world free of charge. The PET provides mobility, community involvement, etc.
There are millions of leg handicapped persons in the world. Diseases, birth defects, landmines, amputations, etc. lead to the need for mobility. In many places there is no mobility at all or an inappropriate device is given. PETs were designed to provide mobility in rough, rural areas for those most in need. Standard wheelchairs are sometimes provided by NGOs but they do not work well in rough terrain or last long in those conditions. Adult caregivers carry or drag their children for years.
PETs are simple mobility devices made of wood and steel with solid rubber tires. It provides mobility to travel in rough terrain (sandy, rocky, dirt, etc.). The wide wheelbarrow tires roll over bumpy pathways. It's easy to hand crank.
PET not only provides mobility, but allows the recipient to become a more active community member. They can start a business using the cargo space, unique to PET. The PET also relieves the burden of the family and others who have tried to assist.
