Final Project Report

Our library was very fortunate to receive a donation of 10 laptops from Pfizer for our library! We will be using these laptops for the further education of our teachers, and also for several of our adult students. We hope that by connecting them to the world of technology that they will be able to bring world-wide views to our students. Now that we have reached our objective for this project, we are going to deactivate it. Thank you so much to everybody that donated to our goal, and we hope that you will continue to keep Chikumbuso in mind for future donations! We have updated our fundraising page, with our new needs and goals, so please check those out so that we can continue to be a thriving community!

New things are happening in the library!

Reading with children is a great way to promote creativity, foster higher-level thinking, and strengthen students’ language skills. Chikumbuso is blessed to have an onsite library for our students to use. Our librarian Annie is always happy to receive new supplies to add to her collection. Throughout the week, Annie reads her favorite books to visiting classes. This week, the first graders were captivated by the tale of Curious George Flies a Kite.

This September, three librarians from the United States will come to Chikumbuso to teach Annie new ways to organize the books in our library. They will also work with the Lubuto Library Project to teach Annie and our teachers about how to more effectively incorporate library resources in the classroom. We are so excited about the new changes coming to Chikumbuso’s school library, and we hope that you will partner with us to bring new books and learning materials to our library.

A Library for Everyone

Mishek and family
Mishek and family

Misheck Mvula is one of Chikumbuso’s primary school teachers. Misheck has been teaching 6th grade at Chikumbuso since 2007 and is very committed to his students. This year Chikumbuso was able to send Misheck to a distance learning program that allows him to continue teaching and get his official teaching certification at the same time.

The trouble Misheck had run into was that the local libraries and book stores in Lusaka didn’t have the resources required for his classes. Misheck didn’t want to waste his education and fall behind so he asked for a computer inorder to access the information needed. Through the training provided to our students and teachers in the library, Misheck has learned the skills needed to research information on the internet and access that which is not available to him in his local community. Through the use of a computer and the wireless internet provided at Chikumbuso, Misheck is able to succeed in his studies,  further his own education, and improve the quality of education provided at Chikumbuso.

Thanks to GlobalGiving’s support we are able to provide a tool that will change the lives of hundreds of students in the future.

New Year Library Report

As the new year begins we are excited to see our library filling with students ready to get their school year off to the right start. While we always have many elementary students here studying, working on projects together, reading, or getting online and writing to friends around the world, we also have secondary students who come in the afternoon. There are few places in Ng'ombe for middle and high schoolers to study quietly. Their homes are usually full of other kids, they have chores that need to be done, and often they don't have electricity to study at night. The library is full of books, internet capable computers, and tutors.

We continue to need supplies, books, and more, so please don't forget to support this incredible library and the work of our students as they start the new year.

Holidays and Libraries

As the holiday season is upon us, we at Chikumbuso are preparing to celebrate with family and friends, as well as the entire Chikumbuso community - whether here in Zambia or across the sea in the U.S.. We are so grateful for all the folks who make up our circle of love and count our blessings that each of you is in our lives.

The kids at Chikumbuso are not like students in other places. As their holiday break approaches, they are not eagerly anticipating lazy mornings, and free play afternoons, but rather, look for excuses to come back to the school - a place of safety, love, and community. Our library stays open during the break, to give the students a place to read, to chat, to learn, and more. They love coming in and finding their friends, picking up a new book, or practicing their computer skills. We love that they are not on the streets or worse.

Please consider supporting our library - a colorful, fun, and vibrant place for our children to stay during the break.
