Ex -street child teen and pre-teen mothers are given reproductive health education, psychological support and practical life skills to enable them to transform their lives and that of their children.
Brazil severely lacks public education on and services for teen pregnancy. The project "To Be A Woman" was born out of the need to serve teens who become pregnant on the streets of Sao Paulo. Homeless, alone and unemployed, they are easily enticed into drugs and prostitution or abandon their child. The project´s multi-disciplinary team empowers these young mothers to break the cycle of violence they were born into, establish a healthy family life, develop their and their childrens´ well–being.
Non-formal courses on reproductive health (including pregnancy/STDs prevention), human rights, conflict resolution; legal and social assistance; psychological care; kids playroom; guidance to shelters, formal education and employment opportunities.
The project will educate hundreds of high risk teens on reproductive health and empower at least 100 teen mums a year with the life skills and knowledge to create far better futures for themselves and their children, serving as models to their peers.
