Music as Medicine

Jaidah
Jaidah

A bright-eyed lover of music, Jaidah’s will to fight and winning personality have carried her through many medical procedures.  At the age of two, she was diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening condition which causes the fibrous sutures in an infant skull to prematurely fuse.

The MusicRx program has made a huge impact on Jaidah and her family during these difficult treatments. Her famous smile lights up the room as she plays the ukulele and sings her favorite songs with CCA’s MusicRx team.

CCA’s award-winning MusicRx program, comprised of music specialists and highly trained volunteers, infuses hospitals with the healing power of music by delivering bedside therapeutic music medicine and staging impromptu hallway performances. MusicRx’s exclusive magical mobile music cart is custom-designed to hold a lending library of nearly 100 specialized instruments, interactive songwriting and recording technology, a karaoke machine, and an iPod doc loaded with music for every age.

Last year, CCA’s MusicRx program brought joy to more than 1,900 children and teens and more than 17,000 were touched by music medicine. CCA also launched a new digital medicine program, MyMusicRx, which delivers the healing power of music to kids worldwide through the MyMusicRx.org website.

With your generous donation we can grow this program and spread the healing joy of music to more children, teens and families.

Support CCA & honor your mother on Mother's Day!

CCA Kiddos with the Portland Trail Blazers
CCA Kiddos with the Portland Trail Blazers

Recently, 32 CCA-served kiddos and family members partied together courtside with the Portland Trail Blazers. A heartfelt thanks to Genentech who sponsored the ‘Block Out Cancer’ program and donated $25 to CCA for every shot blocked by the Trail Blazers. With your help, seriously ill children are able to find friendship in a Chemo Pal, experience music medicine through our Music Rx program, and ease the burden of treatment by going to a basketball game.

Starting May 1, 2012, GlobalGiving kicks off its Mother’s Day Tribute Card Campaign. Make a donation in honor of your mother May 1-13, and GlobalGiving will send her an email, print-at-home, or physical card. Not only will your mother receive a lovely card, but the top 10 projects who have the most donors during the campaign will each receive a $500 bonus. With $500, CCA could fill the pantry at the Caring Cabin for 5 weekends, help train a new Chemo Pal, or buy 5 new guitars for our Music Rx program.

Click here to make a gift in honor of your mom and help CCA to win an extra $500!

Giovanni's Music Medicine

8-year-old Giovanni
8-year-old Giovanni

Music Rx recently paid a visit to Giovanni at The Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel to deliver a little music medicine (chair-side) while he was in treatment. He was busy making beats on the kaossilator, accompanied by Music Rx on the guitar. Giovanni played for a couple hours which helped to pass the time during his transfusion.

According to a recent study, nearly one in five homes have at least one child requiring special health services. Hospitalized and seriously ill children and teens endure significant pain, anxiety, fear, isolation and boredom as they undergo treatment regimens and hospital stays. They often lose contact with their school friends, see less of their siblings and their interactions with adults tend to focus on their disease and treatment program.  For 17 years, Music Rx has been there for seriously ill children and their families, providing music therapy, interventions and entrainment through an evidence-based, research-proven music therapy methodology. Medical research shows music can play a critical role in the daily experience and quality of life of seriously ill children/teens and their families. Benefits are emotional, physiological and social and can include reduced heart rate and blood pressure, relief from stress, apprehension, depression, anxiety and sleeplessness, better pain management, improved mood and relaxation, and opportunities for family bonding and building social support.

Because of you, we can continue to create moments like these for seriously ill children. Thank you!

The Power of Music Rx

Isabella & Keeley
Isabella & Keeley

Eleven-year-old Isabella marches to the beat of her own drum—that is until Music Rx steps into the room. For the past 6 weeks, the Music Rx team has been offering Isabella private guitar lessons—a dream come true! Her natural sense of rhythm has accentuated her ability to succeed on the strings. Most recently, Isabella and music therapist Keeley rocked out to Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. Isabella says she’d be happy to be re-admitted into the hospital so the two could “sing together again.” A true testament to the power of Music Rx and the impact your donations have on children like Isabella!
