A vibrant four-year-old, Lauranne has an inner core of joy that refuses to let anything get her down. She’s endured full-body radiation, a bone marrow transplant and years of chemotherapy to help beat leukemia.
Despite the rigorous treatments, Lauranne’s energy and love for music shines through every day. She loves to sing, plays the ukulele and writes original songs with CCA’s Music Rx team. She’s known for her big smile and snazzy dance moves.
CCA’s award-winning Music Rx program, comprised of music specialists and highly trained volunteers, infuses hospitals with the healing power of music by delivering bedside therapeutic music medicine and staging impromptu hallway performances for sick children and teens. Music Rx’s exclusive magical moblie music cart is custom-designed to hold nearly 100 specialized instruments, interactive songwriting and recording technology and karaoke alongside an iPod lending library doc loaded with music for every age.
Last year, CCA’s Music Rx program brought joy to more than 1,900 children and teens and more than 17,000 were touched by music medicine. CCA also launched a new digital medicine program, MyMusicRx, which delivers the healing power of music to kids worldwide through the MyMusicRx.org website.
With your generous donation we can grow this program and spread the healing joy of music to more children, teens and families.
Recently, 32 CCA-served kiddos and family members partied together courtside with the Portland Trail Blazers. A heartfelt thanks to Genentech who sponsored the ‘Block Out Cancer’ program and donated $25 to CCA for every shot blocked by the Trail Blazers. With your help, seriously ill children are able to find friendship in a Chemo Pal, experience music medicine through our Music Rx program, and ease the burden of treatment by going to a basketball game. Starting May 1, 2012, GlobalGiving kicks off its Mother’s Day Tribute Card Campaign. Make a donation in honor of your mother May 1-13, and GlobalGiving will send her an email, print-at-home, or physical card. Not only will your mother receive a lovely card, but the top 10 projects who have the most donors during the campaign will each receive a $500 bonus. With $500, CCA could fill the pantry at the Caring Cabin for 5 weekends, help train a new Chemo Pal, or buy 5 new guitars for our Music Rx program.

Music Rx recently paid a visit to Giovanni at The Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel to deliver a little music medicine (chair-side) while he was in treatment. He was busy making beats on the kaossilator, accompanied by Music Rx on the guitar. Giovanni played for a couple hours which helped to pass the time during his transfusion.
According to a recent study, nearly one in five homes have at least one child requiring special health services. Hospitalized and seriously ill children and teens endure significant pain, anxiety, fear, isolation and boredom as they undergo treatment regimens and hospital stays. They often lose contact with their school friends, see less of their siblings and their interactions with adults tend to focus on their disease and treatment program. For 17 years, Music Rx has been there for seriously ill children and their families, providing music therapy, interventions and entrainment through an evidence-based, research-proven music therapy methodology. Medical research shows music can play a critical role in the daily experience and quality of life of seriously ill children/teens and their families. Benefits are emotional, physiological and social and can include reduced heart rate and blood pressure, relief from stress, apprehension, depression, anxiety and sleeplessness, better pain management, improved mood and relaxation, and opportunities for family bonding and building social support.
Because of you, we can continue to create moments like these for seriously ill children. Thank you!
Eleven-year-old Isabella marches to the beat of her own drum—that is until Music Rx steps into the room. For the past 6 weeks, the Music Rx team has been offering Isabella private guitar lessons—a dream come true! Her natural sense of rhythm has accentuated her ability to succeed on the strings. Most recently, Isabella and music therapist Keeley rocked out to Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. Isabella says she’d be happy to be re-admitted into the hospital so the two could “sing together again.” A true testament to the power of Music Rx and the impact your donations have on children like Isabella!
For the Sellon family, a grueling 24-week treatment for their son Andrew at Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital ended on a high note...or rather a musical one!
Two-year-old Andrew was diagnosed with cancer in October. His intense treatment required lengthy hospital stays over an eight-month period. But it was during this stressful time that the Sellons discovered the healing power of music, thanks to the CCA's flagship Music Rx program. The award-winning program which started in Portland now operates in 25 medical units throughout the Northwest along with two hospitals in Los Angeles.
“The Music Rx program is closest thing to allowing you to take a break,” said Chris Sellon, Andrew’s father.
Even if Andrew felt sick, Dad said he would perk up whenever the music therapists would visit his room. Dad says he particularly enjoyed tapping the keyboard or rolling his arms to his favorite song, “Wheels on the Bus.”
“When they came in, he would want to reach out, touch and play,” said Chris Sellon. “You read articles, hear about how music can stimulate the mind. I truly believe that it can. It’s a great part of our life that we’ll continue to build on.”
The program inspired Chris to buy a guitar, which the CCA music therapists helped him tune. As the Sellon family begins to spend more time at home, as Andrew’s treatment plan changes, their love for live music will remain.
“It’s definitely spurred things in our life,” said Chris. “I would thank them for offering and bringing music to our table.”
Because of friends like you, CCA’s Music Rx program provided music & tailored services 11,591 times in the last fiscal year.
Please consider continuing to bring the healing power of music medicine to kids like Andrew through CCA’s Music Rx program by making a gift on Wednesday, October 19th when GlobalGiving is matching all donations at 30% up to $1,000 per donor per project.
