MusicRx fights the pain and isolation of hospitalization with music therapists, volunteer musicians and the mobile music cart that plays music, videos and has hundreds of instruments to bring joy!
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The pain and exhaustion of enduring cancer treatment is difficult at any age. For a child, the feelings of boredom, insecurity and anxiety are often amplified because of limited peer interaction. Music Rx meets this need by: distracting the child from thoughts of illness and the pain and exhaustion felt throughout treatment; helping the child and family relax; helping the child express feelings and bringing joy to the child, their family and hospital professionals working at the hospital.
How will this project solve this problem?
Our music therapists and volunteers travel down hallways with a mobile cart emanating soothing music, visit bedsides, operate group sessions and loan out musical instrument and iPods.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project will give 2,500 seriously ill kids the healing power of music. Scientific studies support the many positive therapeutic effects of music, including relaxation, pain management, lowered blood pressure and decreased mortality rates.
