Jovial Futures will enroll 100 at-risk kids from Wheat Ridge 5-8 and Jefferson High School in Wheat Ridge CO into academic and experiential education programs. We will discover the student's passions, team them up with a mentor who shares their interests, and offer volunteer opportunities, internships, and more. By age 18, youth in our program will have improved academically, applied for scholarships, worked in their community, and embarked on a path of success.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
While Colorado ranks near the top in the number of residents with a college degree, it comes in nearly last in number of students who complete college. 25% of Colorado high school students will not finish on time and each year about 15,000 will drop out. Youth who do not achieve a bachelors degree will make $36k less per year than those who did. Drop-outs are twice as likely to be incarcerated or live in poverty. The average drop-out costs taxpayers $292,000 in their lifetime.
How will this project solve this problem?
Through experiential education, academic support, volunteering, internships, college application and scholarship assistance, and job placement- Jovial Futures gives youth the experience, support, and resources needed to succeed. We have partnered with the Search Institute and their 50 years of research show that children who have positive adult encouragement perform better academically, they are more involved in their community, and more likely to stay in school.
Potential Long Term Impact
By removing financial barriers, providing youth with more opportunities, and creating community support systems- our program will help close the gap that keeps Colorado from growing its own professional talent! Investing in our youth, now, will save us millions of dollars down the road, while creating powerful, community driven, young leaders for our next generation.
