Summary

To provide care and protection to women and children in domestic workers who have been victims of trafficking. Counseling is provided to help them cope with the trauma of abuse and torture that they have been subjected to by their employers. In addition they are also provided shelter as a transit before they are rehabilitated towards an independent life. This being a transit shelter it provides care and protection to rescued victims for close to 60 days.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Thousands of women, girls and children are trafficked from rural areas to urban areas where they are forced into domestic servitude in households, small time businesses and some hazardous industries. They work against their will and are subjected to most inhuman treatment by their employers. Most of them are abused and underpaid. Their life is spent in sleazy environment of an industrial establishment or in the kitchen of a restaurant or a house. They need to live life as human beings.

How will this project solve this problem?

The National Domestic Workers Movement has identified several victims of trafficking and rescued them. They are sheltered in our transit homes in Bangalore, Shillong, Panvel, Patna and Ranchi and are trauma counseled and efforts are made to integrate them. This being a transit shelter it provides care and protection to rescued victims for close to 60 days.

Potential Long Term Impact

Give a new life to women, girls and children who are trafficked for domestic work. Reintegration of 160 trafficked victims. Prevention of trafficking by creating awareness about the ill-effects of trafficking and forced migration among the people in areas that are vulnerable to trafficking.
