DISTRIBUTION OF READING AND WRITING MATERIALS

SPHEED distributed reading and writing materials to 60 school going children as per their needs.  During the distribution of reading and writing materials, we invited the School Headmaster of Panchayat Union Primary school, 99-Pudhupalayam and he is very much impressed of our work for the children from quarry workers and he requested the parents to send their children to schools for their better future, available services, schemes and supports providing by the Government for their children in the schools and further he added, NGOs like SPHEED providing an opportunity like running tuition centers after school hours will help the improvement of their children in education and health.

HEALTH CHECK-UP CAMPS:

Monthly health check up camp conducted in each center with the help of private medical practitioners in nearby areas who are voluntarily provided their service for the target children.  Dr. Sivanesan, MBBS, were came and gave the medical health check up to the childrens and family members.  This time we were distributed the masque (use for the working time - protect the air polution ).  During the camps, apart from children, parents of the children and elders in the villages are also benefited.

Group formation:

we were organised the mother's of children to make a self-help group. 15 members in a group. Totally 4 groups were formed. Now we are planing to give a another Suitable Income Generation  programme for them.

Provide Nutritious Food:

SPHEED provided nutritious food through our animators. Fried gram, milk and fruits supplied to all the children in each center weekly twice in working days.

 CULTURAL PROGRAMMES AND SPORTS:                                                      

In each care Centre one programme on Cultural activity and sports events have been conducted. The Sports events like running race, long jump, high jump as usually. Now we added Chess game for the student. The teachers and the students were actively participated in these programmes. 

This time we are added the Yoga with Meditation. Yoga Teacher name is Mr. R. Palani, M.A., ( Yoga)

Conclusion:

PARENTS MEETING: 

It is conducted initially with the support of Parents teachers’ Association and Village Education Committee Members in the following two villages for convincing the parents who are working in stone quarries in Thonimalai. Parents of the children and community leaders participated in the meeting. The following agendas are discussed during the meeting:

• Send their children to the centers
• Request to provide free time to their children for recreation.

Approximately the meeting goes around one hour. The parents of the children are willing their children to the centers.

MOTIVATIONAL TRAINING TO THE TEACHERS:

spheed identified two female teachers who are qualified and experienced and also residing in the same villages.  Later, we organized informal motivational training to them about the project aim and objectives and strategies to work according to plan and the situation of the children’s families. Later they met the parents and requested to send their children to the care centers. And also they enumerate the children who are studying the schools.

The target community preferred allopathic treatment.  So, during the reporting period. Dr. M. MOHANDASS, bsms., (sidha) ,   conducted the health check up camps and provided medicines for common ailments.  During the camps, apart from children, parents of the children and elders in the villages are also benefited.

 We were conducted the  Centre one programme on Cultural activity and sports events have been conducted.  September 5^th , 2012 the day of Teacher’s day Celebrated in the centre.  Speech competition and essay competition were arranged by the centre. The teachers and the students were actively participated in these programmes.

SUCCESS STORY:

99 PUDHUPALAYAM

I am M. Aswini D/o. Murugesan.  I am prmoted from 6^th  7^th standard in Panchatyat Union Middle school, Vasur.

It is nearly 2 kms away from my own village (99-Pudhupalayam). Both my father and my mother (Kavitha – aged 35) working for the past 10 years in Thonimalai Quarry as a stone cutters.  We are living in a small thatched hut near the quarry.  In my hut no electricity and no safe drinking water.  Daily in the morning myself and my mother go for fetching water nearly one and half kilometers.  So I am unable to read and write and doing my homework in the morning is not possible.  The same situation is in the all my neibhourhood and my friends families.   So, many of my friends are slowly drop out from schools.  But I am very much interest in studying and I want to become an engineer in future.  So I tried to go to school regularly.  My parents’ earnings are not sufficient for our daily chore.  My father is a drunkard and most of their earning are goes to wine shop and medical shop.  So, I am unable to purchase my notebooks and school books in time is also not possible because of our breadwinning task are more than my educational expenses.

During March, Mr. M.Kalaivanan uncle(Director of SPHEED) came to our village and discuss regarding the situation of our families and he told that he will going to start tuition centers for us.  I am very much happy to hear the news from Kalaivanan uncle and also I shared it to my friends. Also I am waiting for start the centers. Later he again came to our village and discuss with all elders and in June 2012 he started the center.  Teacher Thenmozhi also came to all our houses and enlisted all our names who are going to school. Uncle distributed notebooks and textbooks to all of us.  Now my family’s huge burden are disappeared. I am very happy to study in the center On behalf of myself and my father and mother, I thank you very much for SPHEED organization and Global Giving, UK.

VASUR

I am V.Selvam.  I am studying 8^th standard in Panchayat Union Middle School in Vasur. My father name is Venkatesan aged 50 and my mother name is Renuka, aged 40.  I have one brother Anand studying 4^th standard and one sister Kalaiselvi studying 7^th standard.  My father and my mother working in stone quarry in Thonimalai. In my hut, there is no electricity.  Myself, my sister and brother are reading and writing in front of the street light.  If it is failure, we are unable to read and write and unable to complete our homework.  Like us, all the children in our area are struggling to study.  Many of them are school drop outs and working as child labourers in the adjacent areas.  But we are trying to complete our school education and willing to go to higher studies and earn more income and enjoy our life in future.  I came to know that SPHEED organization going to start the tuition center in my village.  I eagerly am waiting for their arrival.  One day its staff and Director came to our village and discussed with our parents.  We are unable to spend more money for our education and so I gave my name and my bother and sister’s name and expressed to studying the tuition center.  Later he started the center and providing free education with experienced teacher, who was worked in the Matriculation school.  During the class time I raised my doubts and it was cleared by the teacher.  They also are providing nutritional food like sundal, milk, fruits to us. I am very happy to studying in the center. I am much thankful to the Director Kalaivanan uncle and Global Giving-UK.
