Camp Shout Out 2013 was better than ever!
We had close to 100 participants from all over the world who came together to build a community that supported young people who stutter.
Every day the campers challenged themselves to become better communicators. They volunteered to read announcements, to talk over the loud speaker and to deliver messages. They practiced talking on the phone, ordering from a menu, and telling jokes to friends. They worked hard and took advantage of the opportunity they were given. Campers also participated in traditional summer camp activities: they swam, rode horses, walked on the high ropes course...and of course, sang ridiculous camp songs. Parents reported that their children came home from camp full of confidence and willingness to speak more at home and at school.
The speech-language pathologists and graduate students participated in state-of-the-art training from several well known specialists in fluency disorders. They were able to learn about working with kids who stutter in a way that they will be able to take home and immediately use with other young people.
Camp Shout Out is changing the world for young people who stutter. We can't wait to do it again in 2014.
