Pro-Vida Peru manages a revolving loan fund for older people, mainly women, empowering them to start up small businesses and increase their living standards.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Poor older people are excluded from credit services on the basis both of their poverty and of their age. Our project is attempting to break down barriers to lending to older people, who are generally viewed as not creditworthy and demonstrates that they are responsible in their management of their credit and businesses. Our project benefits 88 older people and 440 family members through increased income, while empowering these older women and men to be both active and productive.
How will this project solve this problem?
Activities include setting up and running a revolving fund and training in small business management. At the end of the project, older people are able to run own their businesses in a sustainable way.
Potential Long Term Impact
We aim to provide credit to older people and technical support for the development of income generating activities. We also aim to promote a change of attitude in the community towards the participation of older people in the economy.
